For Heaven's Sake Read This!

That's a catchy title for an ad, wouldn't you say? And what a lot is on offer here. Just think of what this FREE Book from the Devere Company in Toronto could help you achieve in 1884:

- Secrets Worth Millions!

-Dazzling Eyes and Complexions in 4 hours!

-Luxuriant Moustache, etc., in 21 days!

-Glorious Health! Boundless Wealth! Resistless Love!

It might be difficult timing the eyes, complexion and facial hair though.

I am putting more links in the sidebar, so that it is easier to access some of the series I've written (and will continue to write) on true crime, scandals and ghost stories pertaining to Victorian New York City and Brooklyn. I'll probably add links for the posts on vaudeville/cinema, and on Victorian women.

I wish I had found your weblog long ago. It's a wonderful source of information. A goldmine for a historical novelist, for the detaied storytelling complete with references and citations.

Do you think the book is still in print? I fancy a luxuriant moustache :D

If one stays up late at night or rises early enough on Sunday, one can see almost each one of those promises touted on separate infomercials on cable television. I prefer to see it in print, with the vintage font. Like they say, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." Great post again Lidian!

Maybe people didn't call because the women who wanted the good complexion and sparking eyes didn't want a luxurious moustache, etc. They were too cheap to take out two seperate ads.

Pam - It really does sound amazing!

Cen - As long as people saw it, it would excite them - it is tiny in the original! Will check out tag, too...

Rosina - Thank you! I will definitely come visit you too, I am working on a historical mystery novel (when I can - need to adjust posting schedules I think)

Judith - I tried to find the book on Google Books and Internet Archive, no luck yet. But if I do I will post!

Maureen - You're right, it is like the infomercials (I used to watch them when I was up with a baby, many years ago)

TheSnackHound - Yes indeed, and they have the two faces to indicate this. They were cheap indeed!

I don't know where you find this stuff but this is great! I love the old advertising. Ya, it definitely worked on me but I also get enchanted by infomercials.

Bearded Lady - Enchanted is the perfect word. I am truly enchanted and fascinated with all of this.
