This Cod Liver Oil - though Norwegian - is equivalent to the entire island of Bermuda, according to Scott and Bowne of Belleville, Ontario. How'd they get it all into those little bottles, anyway? Soothingly full of Hypophosphites*, this Emulsion will cure anything from consumption to a run-of-the-mill Canadian cold. And you'll feel like you just had a tropical vacation, too - possibly. Advertisement from Ladies' Monthly, about 1884.* This would be phosphorous acid minus one hydrogen atom, see here and here. And for more on the efficacy of phosphates in Victorian medicine, you can look at this post about Horsford's Acid Phosphate.

Phosphorous acid minus one hydrogen atom? Were you once a chemistry teacher? But this is so crazy - this is the third time I've seen phosphorous acid mentioned in a blog post in the last 30 minutes. What is going on today that I don't know about? (Ummmm... shouldn't that be phosphoric acid?)
Perhaps not. Hope you are doing well today.
When I was younger, my beloved Grandmother (born 1910) used to tell me "In the last month of pregnancy a woman should always take Cod Liver Oil, so that the baby will slide right out." How about that "old wives tale?" She had about 100 different ones she would repeat for various ailments.
Maureen
I can't wait to tell the Mrs. that I have a little mid winter getaway to Bermuda planned.
Max - I took chemistry in 10th grade, and I liked it, but that was a horrendously long time ago (I still enjoy mentioning that I did well in it, but it is a fleeting thrill). I didn't know there were other phosphoric acid posts today, perhaps there's an obscure chemistry holiday being celebrated. Who knew?
Maureen - That rings a bell, I think I saw it in a Victorian health guide for women. The idea does not appeal on several levels, though.
Da Old Man - There you go! A holiday in a bottle (doesn't even have to have cod liver oil in it, in fact it will be more of a holiday if it isn't)
I've been to bermuda and I can assure you it's alot nicer than cod liver oil. YUCK !
bermuda has pink sand beaches;
codliveroil has, yuck.
btw, Pick up your Award at BadGalsRadio. Thanks Top Dropper
RE - There's no doubt that Bermuda would beat a bottle of cod liver oil any day! And thank you -
I'm lying about the other acid posts. You are so gullible. Part of your overall charm. I took chemistry in the 12th grade, hoping they would drop the requirement before then. No such luck. But I won out in the end - I didn't learn a damn thing. Well, enough to pass I suppose. Must have - I graduated. Pretty sure, anyway.
Max - Gullible, yet also cynical (a New Yorker must). I have forgotten all my chemistry though, soon as the Regents exam was over.
